Ordained as a minister in the church of
Scotland in 1980, his first charge was a large parish in Cumbernauld.
He has been here at Davidson's Mains since
1988, which seems to him just like yesterday (though that may be a sign
of his age!).
He knows the city well, since he studied
both Law and Divinity here - and in between drove a fish van for a firm
whose clients included the royal family when in residence at Holyrood
Palace!
It's now, though, the ultimate 'royal'
family that he feels very much part of here at Davidson's Mains, where
his gifts complement the many and varied ministries exercised by a
close-knit team of able and committed leaders.
Like his predecessors, he is chaplain to the
local Davidson's Mains Primary School where he has become a familiar
face to many of the children in the local community: he is also chaplain
to the Royal High School, and enjoys the opportunities he has there to
engage with secondary age pupils.
It was a primary school child, though, whose
words afforded him one of the defining moments of his time, when a boy
said - 'Mr Middleton, could you stop being a minister for a moment,
please, and come over and help us...'
It's a challenge we are all learning to meet!
